AHISP accepts manuscripts for consideration with the understanding that they have not been published elsewhere in print or online and that they are not simultaneously under consideration by any other print or electronic publication. Authors must verify this upon submission.
AHISP will consider manuscripts that have been previously posted to not-for-profit data repositories or preprint servers if the topic warrants immediate dissemination of information. Any author submitting a paper that was first posted to a preprint server must (1) disclose the date and location of posting in their cover letter, and (2) provide an outline in their cover letter of what has been added or amended since preprint posting. Most researchers use the time between preprint posting and journal submission to collect additional data by expanding their respondent sample or extending their follow-up time.
Use of Artificial Intelligence
AHISP requires authors of manuscripts to disclose use of artificial intelligence (AI) in their study design and development, data analysis, manuscript writing, and all other cases associated with production of the research they have submitted for peer review.
As with all disclosure requirements, our purpose in asking for information about AI use is to ensure that reviewers and readers have all necessary information to place evidence in context and self-assess its veracity.
Request for AI disclosure is aligned with scholarly publishing recommendations from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, among other organizations.
At submission, authors must include the following information in a Disclosure section immediately following the Abstract of their manuscript and in their cover letter:
- The name, version/extension number, and manufacture of the AI software platform, program, or tool you used, including Large Language Models, chatbots, or image creators
- A description of how AI assistance was used, including but not limited to:
- Study ideas
- Methods design
- Figure and Table creation
- Data collection or generation
- Data/statistical analysis
- Writing assistance beyond grammar checks
- The dates you used AI assistance
Authors should also include details about AI use in the body of their manuscript where appropriate; for example, if authors used AI support to design their study methodology, that information should be included in the Methods description.
Chatbots (such as ChatGPT) should not be listed as authors because they cannot be responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and originality of the work, and these responsibilities are required for authorship. Authors should not list AI and AI-assisted technologies as an author or co-author, nor cite AI as an author.
Therefore, humans are responsible for any submitted material that includes the use of AI-assisted technologies. Authors should carefully review and edit each part of their study and the resulting manuscript because AI can generate authoritative-sounding output that can be incorrect, incomplete, or biased.
Authors should be able to assert that there is no plagiarism in their paper, including in text and images produced by the AI. Humans must ensure there is appropriate attribution of all quoted material, including full citations.
Conflicts of Interest and Funding
You must describe any funding (financial support) you received for the work on which the manuscript is based, and grant numbers should be provided. This information should appear in the main manuscript, minus any information that would identify the authors.
Each author must also include a financial disclosure statement (eg, employment, funding, or stock ownership with the manufacturer of the product studied) and a conflict of interest statement (eg, any nonfinancial affiliation with a group that may benefit from the study, such as serving on a formulary committee) in the final version of the manuscript. Through Scholastica, you can input this information in the ‘metadata’; it should not be included the main manuscript, which should be anonymized.
Authorship
All authors listed on your manuscript must meet the criteria for authorship outlined by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Authors must meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
- Drafting the work or reviewing it critically for important intellectual content; AND
- Final approval of the version to be published; AND
- Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.
During submission, the Corresponding Author will be asked to confirm that all listed authors meet these requirements and consent to submission of the article to AHISP. For publication, authors may be asked to specify their contributions.
Before submitting, please consider the ethical guidelines pertaining to your particular article type. Specifically, we require the following:
Research Articles
- Financial disclosures, including all relevant financial interests, activities, relationships, and affiliations, not just those related to the research described in your manuscript
- Funding/support information, including a detailed description of the role of the funder in conducting the research and submitting it for publication, as well as a general description of how the funds were distributed (eg, patient compensation, protected faculty time, equipment)
- Information about collection of informed consent
- Institutional review board approval (including a case number, where available)
- Clinical trial registry
- Patient flow diagram (ie, CONSORT)
- A data availability statement; please see this link for more information about selecting the most appropriate statement
Review Articles
We also encourage you to review this short summary of ethical writing guidelines (and violations to avoid) before submitting your research. Any article found to have self-plagiarized content will be rejected; likewise, any article that contains ‘salami sliced’ data may be rejected outright.
Patient Privacy
Authors must obtain written permission from patients to use their photographic images, if those patients are identifiable in the images. If a patient is younger than 18 years, authors must obtain permission from one of the patient’s parents or guardians. Please contact AHISPif patients are shown in any of your Figures and you don’t have a proper consent form from your institution.
Citing Data and Figures from Other Sources
If you use data or figures from other published or unpublished sources, you must obtain permission to reuse them and acknowledge the source fully. We will request a copy of the permission you received.
